So... cooking like Heston ?

So, kind of on a whim, I've decided to try blogging my attempts at cooking Heston Blumenthal recipes.

Why? Well, I am a reasonable home cook who has for a long time admired greatly Heston's work, (as shown on TV shows and books anyway). I used to (before having my daughter) cook dinner parties and such on a regular basis and loved it. I miss it.

Unfortunately, as much as I'd love to try visiting either the Fat Duck restaurant, or his new restaurant, Dinner, my current circumstances just don't permit it. (I have a school age daughter and a husband to put through law school. No, really).

So, despite my tiny kitchen and limited funds and time I'm going to try cooking Heston's recipes at home.

Now I have two Heston cookbooks to draw from -
Heston's Fantastical Feasts,  and his newest book, Heston Blumenthal at home.

Now, they are both pretty damn awesome. The one on the left I have to say is I think mostly a reading book. The recipes are designed for huge professional kitchens etc.

But the one on the right is where I am going to start. This parallels his current TV series, How to Cook Like Heston. (It's currently availaible on SBS on Demand, if you'd like a stickybeak). It has some wonderful coverage of how we taste and experience food and a bunch of other stuff worth knowing.

So here's the plan. I'm going to try a monthly or fortnightly recipe/dinner, depending on my hectic social schedule and other responsibilities. I will more than likely partner a Heston dish with other stuff I am already familiar with. I'm going to invite small groups of people to try it out as we go along (hey, my dining table only seats six!) But only for the brave, I want to try things and experiment. For once, I don't plan on making adjustments for food preferences, so get ready to be bold. Experiment. Because life is too short for dull food.

  1. What a great way to scratch that itch about hosting dinner parties again! If anyone can do this, it's you.

Good luck! Wish I could be there. xo
